Ever since I have started blogging I have been planning to do Dom from Bealleau Kitchen's Random recipe blog challenge. Every month I fail. Sometimes I even get as far finding the random recipe but then give up as I don't have the ingredients or it has nuts in it and the boyfriend is allergic to nuts.

This month was different I resolved to join in. I have so many brilliant cookbooks that I have only cooked a few recipes from.

This month Dom asked us to pick a random recipe from someone else's book collection. I immediately chose my sister who only has a few books but doesn't get to cook out of them much.

We picked Tiffany Goodall's First Flat Cookbook and we made Cress's Coconut and Butternut Squash Dhal. The recipe was really easy to follow and definitely one I would cook again. We swapped the red lentils for green, as this was what was in the cupboard and served with my Fennell Seed, Cardamon and Star Anise Flatbreads. The best thing was that I cooked the meal with my sister. I think we are going to make this a monthly thing and do the monthly random recipe challenge together from now on.

That looks delicious and sounds like a good warming winter dish. I have the ingredients for my random recipe and I'm cooking it tonight. I've also been a slacker with the challenge!

This sounds like perfect warming comfort food for this cold, cold weather. How lovely to cook something with family like that too. I like your idea of making it a monthly get together. Perfect!

This would be the ideal dish for a snowy day like today - delicious. That's a lucky random choice for the winter.

What a lovely activity to do with your sister. I find that when everyone is ok trying new recipes, you can both relish in the successes and failure together. Fun times! I look forward to seeing what you make next month.

Dhal is amazing stuff, and I'm sure even more delicious with the addition of coconut and squash - yum!
